Being a woman is hard enough. How about being a female weightlifter?
Warning: There will be spoilers in this review. You have been warned.
The story is about a weightlifter (Kim Bok Joo) who is studying in a sports college with the dreams of being a member of the national team. Ever since she was a kid, she had won many awards as being one of the best weightlifter in her weight class as well as her age. She is tall and (supposedly) all muscle, with the determination to win.
When asked why she wanted to become a weightlifter, it was mentioned that when she was with her father and they entered the gym, she loved the smell of metal. And the rest is history.
The series is about her life as a female weightlifter, their fierce rivalry with the Gymnasts team who looks down on them, their team’s struggle as being part of the college, and her discovery of love. This in turn mesh up with her insecurity as a woman due to her profession and trying to understand that regardless of what happened, her boyfriend, friends and team mates always stand by her in her time of need.
What strikes me with the series is that it reminds me that even if a person is loved, anxiety and self-doubt will always strike you when you least expect it. It was delivered in a comedic way but it doesn’t escape the fact that it can happen, despite being self confident enough.
The only thing that I am disappointed in the series is the kissing scene. It has been my beef in every k-drama that I have watched. It was awkward and unbelievable — at least in this series, it was manageable. It was still awkward but it can be chucked in due to inexperience of both characters.
Another thing that disappointed me is that the actress’ build. She was too thin to be weightlifting. I have heard that she did pack on a few pounds for the role, but it wasn’t enough. It was managed by making sure she wears bulky clothes, but when it comes to the actual competition, the clothes are tight so it really showed her frame. Nevertheless, her acting skills is wonderful and her facial expressions was funny.
