月間少女野崎くん (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun) Season 1 Review

I have been over the moon with this Anime considering it has been some time before I have watched any series. 月間少女野崎くん (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun) is one of those series that will light up your day with the funny antics of the the characters and reminds you that being silly from time to time is beneficial to those who are around you.

(From L-R) Hirotaka Wakamatsu (Waka), Masayuki Hori (Hori-senpai), Yū Kashima (Kashima). Chiyo Sakura (Sakura), Umetarō Nozaki (Nozaki-kun), Yuzuki Seo (Seo), Mikoto Mikoshiba (Mikorin)

To start, I discovered this anime when I was in Japan for vacation and a friend point it out to me when we were watching the TV. I did not understand the anime one bit because it was Japanese (duh) but my friend vouched that it was a good series. It was one of those really good suggestions that I followed through. The story revolves around Sakura (the girl with orange hair) and her love with an oblivious Nozaki-kun who apparently is a manga artist — hence the title of the anime. At first, Sakura wanted to confess her feelings to Nozaki but was too shy to do it, so she muttered “I am your fan” (ファンです), rather than “I like you” (大好きです). Unfazed, Nozaki-kun gave her an autograph and discovered that the guy she has a hots for is leading a double life! Yes *gasp*, Nozaki-kun is a shoujo manga artist!

Yes, this is from one of the episodes.

For background purposes, if you are a manga artist, normal Japanese people will think you are also an otaku (which is very likely that you are). And being an otaku means that you are not “mature” enough to handle responsibilities, thus, they usually keep their hobbies hidden rather than being judged for they like to do in their past time. Going back to the anime, Nozaki-kun has confessed that he has been observing Sakura, not because she is pretty or desirable, but because she is in the art club and he needs someone to do beta (shading, inking) for his manga. And everything snowballed from there where additional characters who help the manga also appears with all their craziness. I really love the anime mainly because of the slice of life scenarios that reminds of a previous anime called Lucky Star. The lines and scenarios were hilarious that it was one of those series that you love because you aren’t required to think about things. I also follow the manga and even there I am laughing my head off because of all the puns and character interactions. I am so hoping that the series will have a 2nd season as this is one of the refreshing animes that makes you happy.
